Abstract

The Jewish region and society of Galilee, described in Flavius Josephus' lesser work –his autobiography or Vita– reveals that, prior to the outbreak of rebellion against the Roman Empire, the region of Galilee was a true “state within another state”. That means, it shared an ethnic and religious background with the rest of ancient Judea but it was different with respect its economic, urban and cultural development with the rest of the areas of the country. In other words, it was the result of the historical and particular relationship that the Galilee region had during the previous process of Hellenization and Romanization in the region with its urban development. That process forged an area of contradictions that destabilized its participation in the rebellion against the Roman empire in the 66 CE.
