Resumo

Este artigo propõe uma contribuição para a reflexão sobre a invenção da notação posicional sexagesimal, um modo de representar números que era um fundamento da assim chamada matemática “babilônica” (textos matemáticos escritos em cuneiforme no Antigo Oriente Próximo do III até o I Milênio A.E.C.). A história da notação posicional sexagesimal já foi assunto de numerosos estudos. O que se propõe aqui é lançar uma nova luz sobre essa questão não somente a partir do exame de textos, mas também levando em conta o ambiente dos textos: o que acontece fora do próprio texto? Quais são as atividades que acompanham o ato da escrita?
